Watching the World Cup 2014 on a comfy, sectional sofa at home, reminded my son why he contends as a goal keeper on his youth squad-a position many of his teammates don't volunteer to play. On any given practice, Coach B scans the sidelines to recruit a goalie. The boys usually scatter on the field as though lightening mashed the field. Yet my son Christian, 13, remains in the pitch, raising his hand proudly slipping on the goalie jersey and gloves. His tall statue and quick hands, block many goals-a rewarding feat, win or lose.
The World Cup in Brazil has showcased the goalie. And my son has touted the many saves to his teammates.
Last year, my son watched his soccer idols live at Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando like USA standout Michael Bradley who played for AS Roma. Christian beamed from the sidelines. watching the team host a scrimmage. And later, he met other players and told them he was a "GK" on his youth squad. His mom, (me) therefore recruited him in a sports article for a local magazine. Go TEAM USA and FORZA ROMA Byline: Michelle McNiff
